Writing Competition

The Writing Competition consists of two categories. Competitors can participate in either one, or both categories.

Rules and Regulations

The Rules and Regulations of the Written Competitions of Eloquence’24 organised by the All-Island Schools’ English Literary Association are as follows. Any violation of the given rules will result in an immediate disqualification.

  • There are 2 events in the written competitions.
    1. Creative Writing
    2. Copy Writing
  • Both events will be conducted online.
  • Participation in both events is optional. Any participant can compete in any event accordingly.
  • Eligibility Students of government, semi-government and private schools.
    – Home-schooled students.   
  • There are 3 age groups.
    1. Junior (Born 2010 – 2012)
    2. Intermediate (Born 2007 – 2009)
    3. Senior            (Born 2004 – 2006)
  • Unique registration codes are allocated to all participants of each event. The list of registration codes will be sent to the Official WhatsApp group in due time.
  • The attire for the competitions is the school uniform of your respective educational institution. You must be in formal attire if you are home-schooled.
  • The verdict of the judges at ELSL (English Literature Sri Lanka) will be final.

Creative Writing

  • The competition will take place on the 17th of February 2024.
  • The Creative Writing Competition will take place in an online meeting. (Participants must have their video switched on throughout the competition)
  • The contexts for all age categories will be provided during the meeting.
  • Competitors should have two devices with them, one to be in the meeting and the other to photograph their submissions on time.

Rules

  • The time limits for writing are as follows:
    1. Junior – 45 minutes
    2. Intermediate – 30 minutes
    3. Senior – 30 minutes
  • Attendance of the participants will be monitored, any participant that leaves the meeting without prior notice will be disqualified.
  • Use of Artificial Intelligence and/or Plagiarism in your writing is strictly prohibited. If detected, your submission will be disqualified.
  • The word limit for all age groups is 333 Submissions having more or less words may be subjected to disqualification. (332 words is a disqualification, 334 words is also a disqualification)
  • Participants must suggest an appropriate title for their work. (The title is not included in the word count.)
  • Hyphenated words and contractions are counted as one word. (e.g. state-of-the-art, haven’t)
  • Only handwritten work will be accepted and submissions under manuscript (normal) handwriting will be entertained. Submissions violating the rules will be immediately disqualified.

Submission

  • The submission must be in PDF format. (Software such as CamScanner can be used for this purpose)
  • Competitors should include their Registration number (e.g. JIS07) and name on the top of the first page of the document.
  • Rename your document with the Registration code and first name. (e.g. JIS07_Eshan)
  • You must use the submission link available on our website to submit entries. The essay must be submitted latest within 10 minutes after the time limit.
  • Worldwide copyright of each entry remains with the author but ELSL will have the right to publish the winning content in any relevant promotional material.


Copy Writing

  • The competition will take place on the 18th of February 2024.
  • The Copy Writing Competition will take place in an online meeting. (Participants must have their videos switched on throughout the meeting.)
  • The selected paragraphs for each age group of this event will be given during the meeting.
  • Competitors should have two devices with them, one to be in the meeting and the other to photograph their submissions on time.

Rules

  • Only handwritten works will be accepted and submissions under manuscript (normal) handwriting will be entertained. Submissions violating the rules will be immediately disqualified.
  • Punctuation will be taken into consideration when marking your submissions.
  • Attendance of the participants will be monitored, any participant that leaves the meeting without prior notice will be disqualified
  • The submission must be in the PDF format. (Software such as CamScanner can be used for this purpose)
  • When submitting your work, the edges of the paper are not cropped out. Edges of the paper and the written content should be clearly visible.
  • Competitors should write their registration number (e.g. JIS07) and name on the top of the first page of the document.
  • Rename the PDF document with the Registration code and first name. (e.g. JIS07_Eshan)
  • Use the submission link available on our website to submit entries. The work should be submitted within 10 minutes after the meeting has ended.
